North American universities & colleges with Scandinavian studies

Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota > Scandinavian Studies/Norwegian Department

«Usually defined as Denmark, Norway and Sweden, Scandinavia at Concordia also refers to the other Nordic countries of Finland, Iceland, the Færoe Islands and Greenland.

There are three Scandinavian studies program options: (1) a major in Scandinavian studies, (2) a minor in Scandinavian studies, (3) a minor in Norwegian. No major is offered in Norwegian as such, but the equivalent can be acquired through Concordia's programs abroad. Credit may also be transferred from other universities and colleges in the Scandinavian countries. Courses in Danish and Swedish are offered upon sufficient demand.

In addition to a language sequence, students of Scandinavian studies take courses taught in English. Topics include literature, folklore, mythology, history, philosophy, religion, drama, business and current affairs.

Students have many opportunities to speak a Scandinavian language and expand their cultural knowledge of the Nordic countries outside of the classroom. Every year, numerous international students come to Concordia from the Scandinavian countries. Many of them interact with Americans in community language learning, formally and informally. Students also have the opportunity to refine skills in the well-equipped instructional media center on campus. Visiting Scandinavian scholars, speakers, authors and teachers come to the Concordia campus every year to lecture, teach or serve as resource persons for students and faculty. On several occasions, Norwegian royalty and members of the Norwegian parliament and government have visited Concordia.»

Luther College, Decorah, Iowa > Scandinavian Studies

«Luther’s strong ties to Norway have fostered a keen awareness of Scandinavian culture, history, and economics among both the faculty and the student body. As a result, students majoring in Scandinavian Studies have a strong base on which to build.

The Scandinavian Studies major is one of four offered by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. (...) Students develop their command of the language by taking small classes, studying in a state-of-the-art language laboratory with computerized foreign language materials, and living in the Norwegian language house.

Seven courses form the core of the Scandinavian studies major. Students seeking a major complete at least two semesters of intermediate Norwegian, as well as one course in composition and conversation. The remaining classes involve some course work in Ibsen; modern Norwegian literature; and Scandinavian immigration, history, folk art, and folklore.

The goals of the course sequence are to equip students with the language skills necessary to understand and appreciate the culture and literature of Scandinavia and to use the language in a variety of professions or in graduate school.»
