Birkat hammazon | בִּרְכַּת הַמָּזוֹן
Grace after meals in Hebrew with full transliteration and English translation

After having eaten a meal when hammoṣí was said, that is a meal containing bread as a significant ingredient, we say Birkàt hammazón.

The current version is a north-western European Sephardic version based primarily on printed sources from the Netherlands (1634, 1650, 1695) and on the handwritten Copenhagen Haggadah (1739).


Màyim aḥaroním

Before saying Birkàt hammazón all rinse their fingers, and the used water, which is considered tamé (unclean), is taken away from the table. (Some also have the tradition to remove all knives from the table before Birkàt hammazón.)

Wine or other beverages

On Shabbát, yom tób and on other festive occasions the Sefaradí custom is to say the Birkàt hammazón over a glass of kashér grape wine or grape juice. On regular weekdays we usually say the Birkàt hammazón over other beverages instead.

Zimmún

If at least three Jews over the age of bené miṣvá have eaten together, one starts with the Zimmún.
[The following is the normal version for weekdays, Shabbát and yom tób. Other versions exist for specific joyful family events like weddings and berít milá — and in our times optionally also for the zèbed habbát, as well as for mourners.]
The words between (parantheses) are omitted if fewer than ten (some traditional sources say ten men; other traditional sources as well as egalitarian forms of Judaism say ten men and/or women) are present. Wherever the text is set up as { a | b }, a is read in the presence of 3–9 and alternative b is read amongst 10 or more.

The leader says:

1: Who feeds all

2: For the land and for the food

(Some say that women should omit the text in parentheses here.)

We thank You, Adonáy, our Elohím, for Your giving as an inheritance to our ancestors a desirable, good and ample land, covenant and Torá, life and sustenance, [and] because You brought us out from the land of Egypt and redeemed us from the house of slaves; (and for Your covenant which You sealed in our flesh,) and for the statutes of Your will which You made us know; and for the life and food with which You fed and provided for us.

(On Ḥanukká and Purím, say ŋAl hannissím. (not yet included here))

And for it all, Adonáy, our Elohím, we thank You and bless Your Name, as it is said: “And you shall eat and be satisfied, and you shall bless Adonáy, your Elohím, for the good land which the One gave you.” Blessed are You, Adonáy, for the land and for the food.


3: Jerusalem, Your city

Have mercy, Adonáy, our Elohím, on us, and on Yisraél Your people, and on Yerúšalàim Your city, and on mount Ṣiyyón the dwelling place of Your glory, and on the House, the Great and Holy, over which Your Name is pronounced. Our Parent, be our shepherd, feed us, provide for us, sustain us, let us earn a living, and relieve us speedily from all our worries. And let us not depend, Adonáy, our Elohím, upon gifts from flesh and blood, and not upon their loans, for their gifts are small and their reproach great; but rather upon Your Hand, the full and wide one. We shall not be put to shame in this present world, nor be confounded in the world to come; and the reign of the House of Davíd, Your anointed one, restore to its place, speedily, in our days.

On Shabbát, add «Reṣé vehàḥaliṣénu»:

רְצֵא וְהַֽחֲלִיצֵֽנוּ יי אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ בְּמִצְוֹתֶֽיךָ וּבְמִצְוַת יוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי. הַשַּׁבָּת הַגָּדוֹל וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ הַזֶּה. כִּי יוֹם גָּדוֹל וְקָדוֹשׁ הוּא מִלְּפָנֶֽיךָ. נִשְׁבּוֹת בּוֹ וְנָנֽוּחַ בּוֹ כְּמִצְוַת חוּקֵּי רְצוֹנָךְ. וְאַל תְּהִי צָרָה וְיָגוֹן בְּיוֹם מְנֽוּחָתֵֽינוּ. וְהַרְאֵֽנוּ בְּנֶֽחָמַת צִיּוֹן בִּמְהֵרָה בְּיָמֵֽינוּ. כִּי אַתָּה הוּא בַּֽעַל הַנֶּֽחָמוֹת.

Be pleased to strengthen us, Adonáy, our Elohím, with Your miṣvót, and with the miṣvá of the seventh day, this great and holy Shabbát; for it is a great and holy day before You, we will rest thereon and be at ease thereon, according to the miṣvá of the statutes of Your will. Let there not be worries and trouble on the day of our rest, and let us see Ṣiyyón be consoled speedily, in our days, for You are the master of consolation.

 

On Shabbát, including during festivals, the leader concludes:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי. מְנַחֵם עַמּוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּבִנְיַן יְרֽוּשָׁלִַֽם. אָמֵן׃

Barúkh attá Adonáy, menaḥém ŋammó Yisraél bebinyàn Yerúšalàim; Amén.

Blessed are You, Adonáy, our Elohím, consoler of Yisraél Your people by the building of Yerúshalàim. Amen.


On weekdays, including during festivals, the leader concludes:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי. בּוֹנֶה בְּרַֽחֲמָיו יְרֽוּשָׁלִַֽם. אָמֵן׃

Barúkh attá Adonáy, bonè beràḥamáv Yerúšalàim; Amén.

Blessed are You, Adonáy, our Elohím, Builder, in Your mercy, of Yerúshalàim. Amen.


 

On all days of the three festivals, on Roš Haššaná and on roš ḥódeš, add Yàŋalè veyabó:

... to show us mercy on it and to save us. Remember us, Adonáy, our Elohím, on it for good! (Amén!) And visit us on it for a blessing! (Amén!) And save us on it for a good life! (Amén!) and with the word of salvation and mercy, spare us and be gracious to us (and pardon) and have mercy on us and save us, for an Él, a sovereign of mercy and grace are You.

According to the old Spanish and Portugues minhág, conclude part 3 thus:

בְּחַיֵּֽינוּ וּבְחַיֵּי כָּל־בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל. תִּבָּנֶה עִיר צִיּוֹן וְתִכּוֹן הָֽעֲבוֹדָה בִּירֽוּשָׁלִַֽם׃

Beḥayyénu ubḥayyé kol-bét Yisraél, tibbanè ŋír Ṣiyyón, vetikkón háŋabodá bIrúšalàyim.

In our lives, and in the lives off all Yisraél, let the City of Ṣiyyón be built, and restore the service in Yerúshalàim.


4: Who is good and does good

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי. אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָֽעוֹלָם לָעַד. הָאֵל אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ אַדִּירֵֽנוּ בּֽוֹרְאֵֽנוּ גּֽוֹאֲלֵֽנוּ קְדוֹשֵֽׁנוּ קְדוֹשׁ יַֽעֲקֹב רוֹעֵֽנוּ רוֹעֶה יִשְׂרָאֵל. הַמֶּֽלֶךְ הַטּוֹב וְהַמֵּטִיב לַכֹּל שֶׁבְּכָל־יוֹם וָיוֹם הוּא מֵטִיב לָֽנוּ הוּא הֵטִיב לָֽנוּ הוּא יֵיטִיב לָֽנוּ. הוּא גּֽוֹמְלֵֽנוּ הוּא גְּמָלָֽנוּ הוּא יִגְמְלֵֽנוּ לָעַד. חֵן וְחֶֽסֶד וְרַֽחֲמִים וְרֵֽוַח וְהַצָּלָה וְכָל־טוּב׃

Haràḥamán

Praise of God

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יִשְׁתַּבַּח בַּשָּׁמַֽיִם וּבָאָֽרֶץ׃

Haràḥamán Hú yištabbàḥ baššamàyim ubaáreṣ.

May the Merciful be praised in heaven and on the earth.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יִשְׁתַּבַּח בָּֽנוּ לְדוֹר דּוֹרִים׃

Haràḥamán Hú yitpaàr bánu ledór dorím.

May the Merciful be praised among us throughout all generations.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יִתְפָּאַר בָּֽנוּ לְנֶֽצַח נְצָחִים׃

Haràḥamán Hú yitpaàr bánu lenèṣaḥ neṣaḥím.

May the Merciful be glorified among us to all eternity.

Supplications

Haràḥamán Hú yebarékh et habbàyit hazzè veet haššulḥàn hazzè šeakhàlnu ŋaláv.

May the Merciful bless this house, and this table at which we have eaten.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יִתֵּן שָׁלוֹם בֵּינֵֽינוּ׃

Haràḥamán Hú yittén šalóm bēnénu.

May the Merciful grant peace amongst us.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יִשְׁלַח בְּרָכָה וְהַצְלָחָה בְּכָל־מַֽעֲשֵׂה יָדֵֽינוּ׃

Haràḥamán Hú yišlàḥ berakhá vehaṣlaḥá bekhol màŋasè yadénu.

May the Merciful send blessing and prosperity to all the work of our hands.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יַצְלִֽיחַ אֶת דְּרָכֵֽינוּ׃

Haràḥamán Hú yaṣlíaḥ et dərakhénu.

May the Merciful prosper our ways.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יִשְׁבּוֹר עוּלֵֽנוּ מְהֵרָה מֵעַל צַוָּארֵֽינוּ׃

Haràḥamán Hú yišbór ŋulénu mehērá mēŋàl ṣavvarénu.

May the Merciful break our yoke speedily off our necks.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יֽוֹלִיכֵֽנוּ קֽוֹמְמִיּוּת לְאַרְצֵֽנוּ׃

Haràḥamán Hú yólikhénu qómemiyyút learṣénu.

May the Merciful lead us securely to our land.

A modern addition, a prayer for peace between Jews and Muslims:

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יִתֵּן אַֽחֲוָה בֵּין בְּנֵי שָׂרָה וּבֵין בְּנֵי הָגָר׃

Haràḥamán Hú yittén àḥavá bén bené Sará ubén bené Hağár.

May the Merciful give friendship between the children of Sará and the children of Hağár.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יִרְפָּאֵֽנוּ רְפוּאָה שְׁלֵימָה׃

Haràḥamán Hú yirpaénu refuá šelēmá.

May the Merciful heal us with unbroken healing.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יִפְתַּח לָֽנוּ אֶת יָדוֹ הָֽרְחָבָה׃

Haràḥamán Hú yiftàḥ lánu et yadó háreḥabá.

May the Merciful open for us the bountiful Hand.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יְבָרֵךְ כָּל־אֶחָד וְאֶחָד מִמֶּֽנּוּ בִּשְׁמוֹ׃

Haràḥamán Hú yebarékh kol-eḥád mimmènnu biŠmó.

May the Merciful bless each one of us by God’s Name.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יִפְרוֹשׂ עָלֵֽינוּ סוּכַּת שְׁלוֹמוֹ׃

Haràḥamán Hú yifrós ŋalénu sukkàt šelomó.

May the Merciful spread over us the tent of peace.

הָרַֽחֲמָן הוּא יְחַיֵּֽינוּ וִֽיזַכֵּֽנוּ לִימוֹת הַמָּשִֽׁיחַ וּלְבִנְיַן בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ וּלְחַיֵּי הָֽעוֹלָם הַבָּא׃

Haràḥamán Hú yeḥayyénu vízakkénu limót hamMaššiaḥ ulbinyán Bét hamMiqdáš ulḥayyé háŋolám habbá.

May the Merciful grant us life, and make us worthy of Mashíaḥ’s days, and the building of the holy temple, and of the life in the world to come.

מִגְדּ֖וֹל יְשׁוּע֣וֹת מַלְכּ֑וֹ וְעֹֽשֶׂה־חֶ֧סֶד לִמְשִׁיח֛וֹ לְדָוִ֥ד וּלְזַרְע֖וֹ עַד־עוֹלָֽם׃
כְּ֭פִירִים רָשׁ֣וּ וְרָעֵ֑בוּ וְדֹֽרְשֵׁ֥י י֝י֗ לֹֽא־יַחְסְר֥וּ כָל־טֽוֹב׃

בְּרוּכִ֣ים אַ֭תֶּם לַֽיי֑ עֹ֝שֵׂ֗ה שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָֽרֶץ׃
בָּר֣וּךְ הַגֶּ֔בֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְטַ֖ח בַּֽיי֑ וְהָיָ֥ה יי֖ מִבְטַחֽוֹ׃
יֽי֗ עֹ֭ז לְעַמּ֣וֹ יִתֵּ֑ן יי֓ ׀ יְבָרֵ֖ךְ אֶת־עַמּ֣וֹ בַשָּׁלֽוֹם׃

Haràḥamán Miğdól yešuŋót malkó, veŋosè ḥèsed limšiḥó, leDavíd ulzarŋó ŋad ŋolám.
Kefirím rašú veraŋébu; vedórešé Adonáy ló-yaḥserú khol-ṭób.
Ma-ššeakhàlnu yìh’yè lesobŋá, uma-ššešatínu yìh’yè lirfuá, uma-ššèhotàrnu yìh’yè librakhá, kedikhtíb:
Vayyittén lifnēhèm, vayyókhelú vayyotíru kidbàr Adonáy.
Berukhím attèm làAdonáy; ŋosé šamàyim vaáreṣ.
Barúkh haggèber ašèr yibṭàḥ bàAdonáy; vehayá Adonáy mibṭaḥó.
Adonáy ŋóz leŋammó yittén; Adonáy yebarékh et-ŋammó baššalóm.

A tower of salvation for God’s sovereign and doer of kindness to God’s anointed; to David and his seed, forever.”
The lion whelps may be poor and hungry, but the seekers of Adonáy will not lack any good thing.
What we ate let be satisfying, and what we drank let be for medicine, and what we left let be for a blessing, as it is written:
And he put before them, they ate and left over according to the word of Adonáy.
May you be blessed to Adonáy, the Maker of Heavens and earth.
Blessed the man who trusts in Adonáy; and may Adonáy be his trust.
Adonáy! Give Your people strength; Adonáy! Bless Your people with peace.

Blessing over wine or other beverage

(During weddings, and also during the seven days after the wedding (if both bride and groom have been married before: three days) if anyone is present who did not attend the wedding, we say Shèbaŋ berakhót over the wine if there is a minyán. If there is no minyán we say only the berakhá over wine and the seventh berakhá.)

Blessing over kashér grape wine or grape juice

If the Birkàt hammazón was said over kashér wine/juice with at least 50% grape juice we say the berakhá over wine:

סַבְרִי מָֽרָנָן. (חַיִּים!) בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי. אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָֽעוֹלָם. בוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגֶּֽפֶן׃

Sabrí máranán? (Ḥayyím!) Barúkh attá Adonáy, Elohénu mèlekh háŋolám, boré perí haggèfen.

What say my honoured company? (Life!) Blessed are You, Adonáy, our Elohím, sovereign of the universe, creator of the fruit of the vine.

Blessing over other beverages

If the Birkàt hammazón was said over other beverages than grape wine or grape juice — such as other juice, fruit syrup, coffee, tea, milk, soda/pop, ale, beer or wine other than grape wine, we say the berakhá shèhhakkól in stead of perí haggèfen:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי. אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָֽעוֹלָם. שֶֽׁהַכֹּל נִֽהְיָה בִּדְבָרוֹ׃

Barúkh attá Adonáy, Elohénu mèlekh háŋolám, šèhakkól nìh’yá bidbaró.

Blessed are You, Adonáy, our Elohím, sovereign of the universe, by Whose Word all was caused to be.
